When most people think of vaccines, they think of children. But the truth is, adult vaccinations are just as essential to maintaining good health, especially as we age or encounter new health risks. At Charleston Direct Primary Care, we believe in proactive preventive care, and staying current on vaccines is one of the simplest ways to protect your long-term health. Whether you’re 25 or 75, certain immunizations are key to preventing illness, reducing complications, and protecting the people around you.
In this blog, we’ll explore the essential adult vaccines, why they’re important, and how Charleston DPC makes it easy to stay on track.
1. Flu Vaccine (Influenza)
Recommended: Annually for all adults
The flu can lead to serious complications, especially for older adults, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions. An annual flu shot lowers your risk of infection and helps reduce the spread of the virus to others in your household or workplace.
At Charleston DPC, flu vaccines are quick, convenient, and often offered during routine visits in the fall and winter months. There’s no need for crowded waiting rooms or last-minute pharmacy runs—just preventive care when you need it.
2. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis)
Recommended: Once as an adult, with a Td booster every 10 years
Most people receive a Tdap vaccine as children, but protection fades over time. Adults should receive one Tdap booster if they haven’t already, and then a Td (tetanus and diphtheria) booster every 10 years.
Pertussis, or whooping cough, is particularly dangerous for infants. If you’re a new parent, grandparent, or caregiver, getting your Tdap can help protect vulnerable babies until they’re old enough to be vaccinated.
3. Shingles (Herpes Zoster)
Recommended: Adults 50 and older
Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It can result in long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) and other complications, especially in older adults. The CDC recommends the Shingrix vaccine, which is given in two doses and is more than 90% effective.
Even if you had shingles in the past or got the older Zostavax vaccine, Shingrix is still recommended for better protection. At Charleston DPC, we’ll help you figure out the best timing and ensure you’re up to date.
4. HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
Recommended: Adults up to age 26, and in some cases up to age 45
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. While most cases resolve on their own, certain strains of the virus are linked to cervical, anal, and throat cancers.
The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) effectively prevents these cancers. It’s recommended for all individuals through age 26, and for adults 27–45 after discussing individual risk factors with a healthcare provider. The vaccine is given in two or three doses, depending on your age at the time of your first shot.
5. COVID-19 Vaccines and Boosters
Recommended: All adults, especially those with chronic health conditions or weakened immune systems
COVID-19 vaccines continue to be an essential part of adult preventive health. Updated boosters are available to help protect against emerging variants. At Charleston DPC, we can help you understand which COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are appropriate for your age and health status.
6. Pneumococcal Vaccine
Recommended: Adults 65 and older, and younger adults with certain conditions
This vaccine protects against pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It’s especially important for seniors and anyone with heart, lung, or immune conditions. There are two types (Prevnar 20 and Pneumovax 23), and your doctor can help determine your schedule based on age and risk.
Why Vaccines Matter for Adults
As we age, our immune system naturally weakens, and we face a higher risk of complications from common infections. Vaccines help your body stay ready to defend against serious threats.
Vaccines aren’t just about your health either. They’re also about community protection. Staying current helps protect infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with compromised immune systems who may not be able to receive certain vaccines themselves.
